Schools and enrolment
Sunshine Coast school catchments, explained
The short answer: Queensland state schools with an enrolment management plan guarantee a place to children living inside their catchment, and accept out-of-catchment enrolments only if there is space. Check the exact address on the state EdMap catchment tool, confirm it with the school in writing, then sign your lease or contract.
Do this in order
How to check a catchment before you commit
1. Shortlist the schools
Pick two or three schools that fit your child's year level, needs and any specialist programs. Note whether each is state, Catholic or independent - the enrolment rules differ.
2. Check the exact address
Test each candidate address on the Queensland Government EdMap catchment tool. Boundaries can run down the middle of a street, so check the property, not the suburb.
3. Confirm with the school office
Email the school with the address and your intended start term. Ask whether it has an enrolment management plan, whether it has capacity, and what proof of address it accepts.
4. Sign housing last
Only commit to a lease or purchase once the catchment and capacity answers are in writing. This is the single most common mistake relocating families make.
Catchment boundaries, enrolment management plans and school capacity change over time. Always treat the school office and the Queensland Department of Education as the authoritative source for your address and start date.

Catchment and enrolment questions
What is a school catchment in Queensland?
A catchment area is the geographic zone a Queensland state school draws its enrolments from. Where a school has an enrolment management plan, children living inside the catchment are guaranteed a place, and children outside it can only be enrolled if the school has spare capacity.
How do I check a Sunshine Coast school's catchment before renting or buying?
Check the address - not the suburb - on the Queensland Government's EdMap catchment tool, then confirm the result with the school office in writing before you sign a lease or contract. Catchment boundaries can split a single street, and boundaries are reviewed from time to time.
Does living in a suburb guarantee a place at its local school?
No. Enrolment depends on the specific address falling inside the catchment, and on the school having capacity. Some Sunshine Coast schools are at or near capacity and manage enrolments tightly, so always confirm the address with the school rather than assuming a suburb-wide rule.
Can we enrol out of catchment on the Sunshine Coast?
Sometimes. Schools with an enrolment management plan consider out-of-catchment applications only after in-catchment demand is met, often with a waiting list and criteria such as siblings already enrolled or specialist program placement. Treat an out-of-catchment place as possible, not planned.
What proof of address do schools accept?
Usually a signed lease agreement, a rates notice or a purchase contract, plus a recent utility bill in the parent's name. If you are still house-hunting, ask the school what it will accept as an interim document and what deadline applies.
Do private and Catholic schools have catchments?
No. Independent and Catholic schools set their own enrolment policies, and many take applications a year or more in advance. Proximity, sibling enrolment, faith affiliation and interview or waiting-list processes usually matter more than a boundary line.
When are Sunshine Coast school enrolments usually decided?
Prep and Year 7 intakes for state schools are typically worked through in the year before entry, with enrolment interviews from around mid-year. Mid-year and mid-term enrolments are possible where there is capacity. Independent and Catholic school offers often run further ahead again.
Should we choose the school first or the suburb first?
If a specific school matters to your family, choose the school first and let it narrow your housing search - that avoids signing a lease outside the catchment. If you are flexible on schools, choose the suburb on work, lifestyle and budget, then check which schools serve that address.
Can a rental address affect our catchment status later?
Yes. If you move out of the catchment after enrolling, most schools allow the child to continue, but ask the school to confirm its position in writing. If you plan to buy later, check the new address against the catchment before you commit.
Who can help us line up housing inside a school catchment?
For rentals, a relocation service can search and apply on your behalf while you are still interstate or overseas. For purchases, an accredited buyer's agent can inspect and negotiate inside a defined catchment - look for REBAA, PIPA or REIQ membership.
